Preventative Dental Practice
We are very pleased to announce that we are a fully preventive practice. What does this mean for you?
We shall be trying to prevent you suffering from dental decay, periodontal (gum) disease and reducing the amount of treatment through incorporating Minimal Intervention Dentistry (MID). We will be taking a more holistic approach to your dental health and consider other factors that may be affecting it. We have a number of questionnaires that we ask you to complete which may indicate how you can help reduce future problems. Listed below are some exciting web sites where you can learn more about your dental health and we have a vast amount of dental literature that giving you tips and advise. If you smoke we can use our special intra oral camera showing you the damage it is doing to your teeth and gums. This preventive approach involves us all working together, we will not force things on you or lecture you but we do ask that you become involved in your dental care as prevention is better than cure. We really want to work together to improve the dental health of our clients!
Minimal Intervention Dentistry
One of the aims that we have is to make your visit pleasurable as possible as we are not here just to drill/fill or remove teeth. By trying to reduce dental decay through showing you how to better care for your teeth and introduce techniques to minimise tooth destruction we hope to improve our standard of care further. This may involve the use of HealOzone which is designed to deliver a measured quantity of Ozone to a tooth lesion under vacuum conditions and evidence has shown that this can “kill” dental decay thus avoiding the need for drilling and filling. Dental decay. We shall try to involve all those “at risk” of decay in our special Caries Prevention Program this would involve you completing a questionnaire, which may highlight a dietary problem. We would then give you advice either at an initial visit or by arranging a special appointment with one of our trained staff and some printed advise. We have specialist equipment - DIAGNODENT & CARIESCAN which detect early signs decay. The Diagnodent detects changes in the mineral and crystal composition of the dentine which effect the density of the tooth structure, this gives an idea of whether and how much decay is present.
We will try to repair rather than replace damaged tooth/filling and so reduce the trauma to you and your teeth. We use materials that “stick” to you teeth to reduce the need for drilling. WE DO NOT USE MERCURY BASED FILLINGS AT ALL. We can use our revolutionary Air Abrasion unit (THE AQUACUT), which can literally blow tooth decay away and cut a cavity without the need for drilling and sometimes avoid a local anaesthetic.

Periodontal (gum) disease. We closely examine you for signs of disease and advise you of the situation and the action that is required. We can demonstrate to you how to improve your tooth brushing technique and also the use of dental floss/special toothpaste or other oral cleansing advice. We may require you attending more frequently allowing us to scale and polish your teeth with our ultra sonic scaler and specialised tips. We also have a new Test Kit that indicates the germs that are present in your plaque, which then helps to give you specific treatment. We do sell a wide range of oral care products, which are not available in the shops.
New metal free crowns - have proven to give excellent results especially the new LAVA (and E-MAX techniques. Made from ceramic material similar to the natural ceramic of your teeth, Zirconia has such a natural appearance it can barely be distinguished from natural teeth. The inner layers are coloured to match the individual colour of your teeth then finished to match neighbouring teeth which results in the colour translucency of your teeth imitated to the very core. As they contain no metal there are no dark margin lines at the neck of your tooth. Only natural raw materials are used so nothing is likely to cause a reaction in your mouth. Lava can withstand high levels of chewing and biting stress and are guaranteed for 5 years
Also, we can use the new generation of tooth coloured fillings that “stick” to your teeth. These types of filling often do not require any needle or drilling as they can bond to your teeth or filling. So if you break a little bit of tooth or filling off then we can possibly simply “stick” on some tooth coloured filling.
Part of this prevention program, as well as those just mentioned, is the use of products that can promote “healing” of your tooth such as Tooth Mousse / Recaldent Xylitol / Fluoride / Macleans Remineralise Toothpaste.
There are some very new; exciting and innovative products that reduce decay AND help your teeth recover from the disease. Xylitol and Tooth Mousse (Recaldent) can actively remineralise tooth substance and hence repair a tooth. They come in a quite a few formats such as a sweetener and also as gum/pastilles/toothpaste and can be spotted on food labelling. Fluoride is also very important, brushing at least twice a day with toothpaste containing more than 1200ppm fluoride. Please check on reception or ask one of our team.
